One of the biggest victims of the wine industry’s woes, Marlborough’s Awatere Vineyard, owes creditors more than $24 million.

Awatere Vineyard Holdings Ltd and sister company and lessee Awatere Vineyard Estates Ltd were placed into receivership on June 1 by Westpac after defaulting on a loan.

The former wife of a police officer was today jailed for four years for defrauding her Tauranga employer of more than $1.3m.

Michelle Campbell’s offending was described as a “huge web of deceit” by Judge Thomas Ingram in Tauranga District Court.

The 43-year-old mother defrauded car dealers Ebbett Tauranga Holden, where she worked as the business manager, over a three-and-a-half year period from September 2006

Creditors are still owed $120,000 more than 12 months after Pages Paint Centre Timaru was placed in liquidation.

In their second six-month report, liquidators from PricewaterhouseCoopers, partner Malcolm Hollis and director Rhys Cain, said all assets of the company had been sold, with the residual remaining from the sale of the assets and collection of debtors distributed to South Canterbury Finance, the general security holder, in settlement of their claim.

A former Queenstown developer said a change in receivership laws could help safeguard homeowners from risking private property.

Terralink International figures show the number of individuals losing their family home has increased, with 264 mortgagee sales in May this year, up from 246 in April.

Developer Tanya Chapple, 42, of New Plymouth, bought land off Arthurs Point Rd near Queenstown in 2004 and started building a 98-room studio apartment complex in 2007.

The $14.3 million project came to a “screeching halt” when the mortgagee, Dominion Finance, collapsed in 2008 and her company, Stormcat Property Development Trustees, went into receivership in May last year.

A Nelson finance company at the centre of a Serious Fraud Office probe has been placed in liquidation.

In the High Court at Nelson yesterday, Associate Judge Rob Osborne agreed to put Halifax Finance in liquidation, and appointed Wellington-based firm ShephardDunphy as the liquidator.

The move comes three years after Halifax Finance ceased trading. The company is owned by former car dealer Paul Brownie, who was not represented in court.
